Route Overview and Logistical Pacing of the Tour
This short road safari from Nairobi is an efficient way to visit the Great Rift Valley's key ecosystems. The 2-day circuit is designed for maximum game viewing, with logical and manageable driving times. The itinerary begins with a 3-4 hour drive from the capital to Lake Nakuru National Park, allowing for a full afternoon game drive.
The second day involves a short 1-2 hour transfer to Lake Naivasha. This schedule provides ample time for the boat safari and other activities before the 2-3 hour return journey to Nairobi. This pacing avoids long, tiring travel days, making it a practical short safari.
Wildlife Expectations and Seasonality
This itinerary focuses on parks with distinct, high-density wildlife populations. Viewing is consistent year-round.
- Lake Nakuru National Park: A fenced conservancy known for its reliable rhino sightings, supporting significant populations of both Black and White Rhino. It is a sanctuary for the endangered Rothschild's Giraffe. The park's acacia woodland also supports Lion, Leopard, and large herds of Buffalo. The alkaline lake is a habitat for Lesser and Greater Flamingos, though numbers fluctuate based on water levels.
- Lake Naivasha: Large pods of hippo are a primary feature of this freshwater lake and the focus of the boat safari. The shoreline and adjacent grasslands are home to Giraffe, Zebra, and Waterbuck. The area is also excellent for birdwatching, with over 400 species recorded, including the African Fish Eagle.
Accommodation and Vehicle Standards
This tour is arranged at a mid-range service level, offering a balance of comfort, location, and value.
- Accommodation: You will stay in a mid-range safari lodge or a permanent tented camp. These properties have comfortable en-suite facilities, mains electricity, and full restaurant and bar services. They are selected for their reliable standards and proximity to safari activities.
- Transport: Ground transport is provided in a safari-outfitted minivan. The vehicle has a pop-up roof, which provides an unobstructed, panoramic platform for game viewing and photography. This vehicle choice is well-suited for the maintained road networks in Nakuru and Naivasha.
UK Traveller Essentials
Practical information for clients travelling from the United Kingdom.
- Visa / Entry Requirements: UK passport holders require a Kenyan Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA). This must be applied for and approved online *prior* to departure. It is not possible to obtain an eTA on arrival.
- Plugs & Electricity: Kenya uses a 240V supply and the Type G plug socket. This is the standard 3-pin rectangular plug used in the UK, meaning travel adaptors are not necessary.
- Luggage: Standard suitcases are permissible on this road-only safari. We recommend soft-sided duffel bags because they are more pliable and easier to store in the vehicle.
