The Masai Mara National Reserve covers 1,510 square kilometres of open savannah, riverine forests, and seasonal marshlands, representing one of Africa's most significant wildlife conservation areas.

Alama Camp Mara sits within the reserve's boundaries, occupying a strategic position that affords direct access to high-density game viewing territories and the annual wildebeest migration routes.

Alama Camp Mara Location and Access Details

Alama Camp Mara's position inside the national reserve provides a significant logistical advantage, minimising transit times to productive wildlife areas.

International visitors typically access the camp via scheduled light aircraft flights from Nairobi's Wilson Airport (WIL) to the nearby Ol Kiombo Airstrip, located approximately 280 kilometres southwest of the capital. The flight duration is approximately 45 minutes.

Upon landing at Ol Kiombo, guests are met by a camp representative for the final transfer to the lodge. The transfer is conducted in a custom-built 4x4 safari vehicle and functions as an introductory game drive, with a duration of roughly 40-50 minutes, subject to wildlife sightings en route. The camp can organise these local air transfers as part of a complete itinerary.

Camp Layout and Guest Safety Protocols

Alama Camp Mara features an unfenced perimeter, a deliberate design choice that delivers an immersive and authentic bush experience. The main lodge houses the lounge and dining areas, forming the property's social centre. Guest tents are positioned along cleared pathways radiating from this point, spaced to ensure privacy whilst maintaining a cohesive layout.

The camp manages guest safety in this open environment with stringent, well-practised protocols. During daylight hours, guests are free to move between their tents and the main lodge. After sunset, movement is strictly prohibited without an escort. Maasai askaris (guards), who possess an intimate knowledge of animal behaviour, are on duty 24/7.

They escort guests to and from their tents for dinner and other evening activities, communicating via radio and utilising torches to ensure a secure passage. Each tent is also equipped with a two-way radio for any immediate assistance requirements.

Luxury Tented Suites at Alama Camp Mara

Alama Camp Mara's accommodation consists of just ten exclusive luxury canvas suites, ensuring an intimate and private guest experience. Each structure is a permanent tented unit, constructed of heavy-duty canvas set upon a raised wooden plinth to enhance views and airflow.

Suite Amenities and Private Verandahs

Each suite features a spacious interior layout with polished wooden floors and campaign-style furniture. The primary sleeping area is configured with either a king-size or twin beds, draped with protective mosquito netting.

The rear of the tent contains a private, en-suite bathroom with a flush toilet, vanity with twin basins, and a safari-style shower supplying solar-heated hot water. A central solar installation supplies 24-hour power for lighting and charging personal devices.

The defining feature of each suite is its private, shaded verandah at the front. Furnished with comfortable chairs and a small table, this space offers panoramic, uninterrupted views across the Mara plains, allowing for passive wildlife viewing directly from the room.

The Main Lodge and Central Guest Areas

The main lodge building serves as the social and operational core of Alama Camp Mara. Constructed from local stone, wood, and thatch, it houses the primary lounge, a small library, and the main dining area.

Comfortable sofas and armchairs furnish the lounge, creating a relaxed environment for post-drive debriefs. Reliable Wi-Fi connectivity is available within this central mess area. The dining space offers both communal and private tables, with options for al fresco dining on the main deck, weather permitting.

Game Drives and Safari Programme

The safari experience at Alama Camp Mara focuses on maximising wildlife viewing opportunities, particularly for the Big Five. The primary activity comprises morning and afternoon game drives conducted in custom-outfitted, open-sided 4x4 Land Cruisers, led by KPSGA-certified Maasai guides.

A typical day's schedule follows the natural rhythm of the bush, commencing with an early wake-up call and a pre-dawn game drive to observe predators when they are most active. Guests return to camp mid-morning for a full breakfast, followed by a period of leisure.

After lunch and a short siesta, the afternoon game drive departs, often culminating in a "sundowner" stop with drinks and snacks at a scenic viewpoint before returning to camp after dark for dinner.

Is Alama Camp Mara the Right Choice for You?

Alama Camp Mara is exceptionally well-suited for seasoned safari travellers, photographers, and couples seeking an authentic, high-immersion wildlife experience. The unfenced nature of the camp provides a genuine connection to the wilderness that is a significant drawcard for this demographic.

Due to this unfenced design and the reliance on escorted movement after dark, the camp is less recommended for families with very young or unsupervised children. Its strategic location, high-calibre guiding, and comfortable yet unpretentious accommodation make it a premium choice for those prioritising the quality of the safari over extensive resort-style facilities.
