The African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW) Giraffe Centre is a 140-acre sanctuary in Nairobi's suburban Langata area, dedicated to the conservation of the Rothschild's giraffe. This subspecies is one of the most endangered in the world. Giraffe Manor stands as the historic centrepiece of this estate, an exclusive hotel built in 1932 that facilitates direct guest interaction with the resident giraffe herd. The conservation programme was started here in 1979 by Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville.

Architecture and Heritage of Giraffe Manor

Sir David Duncan, the original owner, constructed Giraffe Manor in the style of a classic Scottish hunting lodge. The main building presents an elegant, ivy-covered stone facade, large mullioned windows, and a stately interior defined by polished wood panelling, period furniture, and open fireplaces. The property is located approximately 20 kilometres from Nairobi's central business district, offering a country estate atmosphere close to the city.

The estate comprises two primary residential buildings: the original Main Manor and the more recent Garden Manor. The Garden Manor was meticulously designed as a precise replica of the main house, ensuring complete architectural continuity and aesthetic harmony across the grounds.

Rooms and Suites at Giraffe Manor

The accommodation at Giraffe Manor consists of twelve individually designed rooms and suites distributed across the two buildings. Each room is named after a key figure, such as founders Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville, or a notable giraffe associated with the property's history. All rooms feature en-suite bathrooms, antique furnishings, and classic four-poster beds.

Historic Main Manor Accommodation

The six rooms within the original Main Manor provide the most historically authentic experience. The Karen Blixen Suite, named for the author of 'Out of Africa', and the Finch Hatton Suite are premium rooms situated on the front facade. Both have direct access to balconies from which giraffes are frequently fed. Other rooms, like the ground-floor corner Jock's Room, also provide exceptional opportunities for giraffe interaction directly through their large windows during designated feeding times. These specific rooms are highly sought after by guests who prioritise direct, from-the-room animal encounters.

Garden Manor Accommodation

The six rooms in the Garden Manor are positioned across a lawn from the main building. These rooms offer the same high standard of luxury and interior design. Their primary interaction point with the giraffes is the ground-floor terrace and the main breakfast room of the Main Manor. This arrangement is well-suited for guests who prefer a slight separation between the main social hub and their private quarters.

Scheduled Giraffe Encounters at the Manor

The defining feature of a stay at Giraffe Manor is the carefully managed interaction with its resident herd of Rothschild's giraffes. This experience is highly structured to ensure the welfare of the animals and the safety of all guests. The habituated herd roams freely within the sanctuary grounds and consistently approaches the manor house for supplementary feeding provided by the staff and guests.

The Morning and Afternoon Tea Ritual

Guaranteed interaction times are scheduled for two key periods each day. The first occurs during breakfast, served between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM in the main dining room, where large windows are opened to allow the giraffes to investigate for food pellets. The second structured interaction takes place during afternoon tea, typically from 5:00 PM, on the main terrace. Guests staying in the specific front-facing rooms of the Main Manor may also enjoy a more exclusive encounter as giraffes often peer through their bedroom windows in the early morning.

Guest Services and Property Logistics

The manor operates with significant logistical efficiency to ensure guest comfort and connectivity. The entire property is fully fenced, creating a secure environment where guests, including young children, can walk the grounds in safety. The estate is also home to resident warthogs and numerous bird species, which add to the managed wildlife experience. Key operational features include:

  • 24-hour mains electricity supported by backup generators
  • Complimentary high-speed WiFi accessible throughout the property
  • All-inclusive rates covering all meals, house wines, spirits, and laundry service
  • Private vehicle transfers to and from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport
