Jambo Mara Safari Lodge

Tier Mid-Range
Type Safari Lodge

The Masai Mara National Reserve covers 1,510 square kilometres of vast, grass-covered plains and acacia-dotted savannah, representing a quintessential East African safari environment.

Jambo Mara Safari Lodge is situated within the reserve's boundaries, offering guests direct and immediate access to prime game-viewing circuits.

Location and Game Drive Access at Jambo Mara Safari Lodge

Jambo Mara Safari Lodge's position inside the Masai Mara National Reserve provides a primary logistical advantage, eliminating transit time through gate formalities each day. Located approximately 270 kilometres from Nairobi, the journey takes around six hours by road or a 45-minute charter flight.

Game drives commence directly from the property. The main Mara River crossing points for the Great Migration require a considerable drive from the lodge's location, typically necessitating a full-day excursion with a packed lunch.

Visitors whose primary intent is to witness the river crossings must factor this distance into their planning.

Maasai-Inspired Architecture and Communal Areas

The main lodge building uses local stone and timber, with design elements that reflect traditional Maasai architectural styles. This central structure houses the reception, a communal lounge area, and the main dining room.

These spaces feature large openings and a veranda that provide expansive, uninterrupted views across the Mara plains. The property includes a separate, outdoor swimming pool, offering a cool respite from the midday heat after a morning game drive.

Private Cottage Accommodation at Jambo Mara Safari Lodge

Guest accommodation at Jambo Mara Safari Lodge consists of 30 detached cottages, built in a style consistent with the main lodge building. Each unit is carefully sited to provide privacy and a direct connection to the surrounding bush, allowing guests to feel immersed in the environment.

Cottage Amenities and Design

The cottages are furnished with a focus on functionality and comfort, suitable for the mid-range safari traveller. The interior layout includes a bedroom area with either double or twin bed configurations and an en-suite bathroom with a shower, washbasin, and flush toilet.

A small, private veranda is attached to each cottage, providing a personal space for wildlife observation.

  • En-suite bathroom with hot and cold running water
  • Private veranda with safari chairs
  • Mosquito netting over beds
  • Bottled drinking water

Power, Connectivity and Lodge Utilities

A generator supplies power to the lodge on a timed schedule. Electricity is available in the early mornings (approx. 5:30am to 7:30am) and again in the evenings (approx. 6:30pm to 10:30pm).

This programme is specifically designed to accommodate the charging of essential electronics such as camera batteries and phones. Standard three-pin charging points are available within the guest cottages.

Jambo Mara Safari Lodge provides Wi-Fi connectivity, but service is restricted to the main communal lounge and is subject to the generator's operating hours.

Navigating the Unfenced Grounds and Wildlife Safety

The property is entirely unfenced, allowing for the free movement of wildlife through the grounds, which is a significant part of the safari experience. Herbivores such as zebra and impala are common sights within the lodge area.

Due to this open design, guest movement around the lodge is restricted after dark for safety. Maasai security personnel from the local community, known as 'askaris', are on duty 24 hours a day and are required to escort all guests to and from their cottages during the hours of darkness.

This unfenced environment requires constant and vigilant adult supervision for parties travelling with young children.

Jambo Mara Safari Lodge is a well-situated, mid-range property that offers an authentic safari experience focused on wildlife viewing. Its timed power schedule and unfenced grounds make the lodge best suited for independent travellers, couples, and dedicated photographers who prioritise direct reserve access over 24/7 resort-style amenities.

While families are welcome, the operational realities and need for constant supervision of minors may be more challenging for those with very young children.
