Kilima Camp is located outside the official boundary of the Masai Mara National Reserve, a key logistical detail for any visitor's itinerary. This position on private land permits activities not allowed within the national reserve itself, such as walking and horse riding safaris. The property is approximately 280 kilometres west of Nairobi. Access to the primary game viewing areas within the Mara Triangle, which is managed by the not-for-profit Mara Conservancy, requires a daily transit down the escarpment road. Visitors must pay the corresponding daily park conservation fees at the Oloololo Gate. The drive from the camp's reception to the main game drive circuits inside the reserve typically takes 30 to 45 minutes, contingent on prevailing weather and road conditions.

The central mess area, which serves as the communal hub for dining and lounging, is a permanent structure of timber and stone. This main building features open sides to maximise airflow and the panoramic outlook. Clearly demarcated but natural underfoot pathways connect the individual guest tents to this main building. The entire property is oriented to leverage its escarpment position, with the pool, lounge, and dining verandah all offering uninterrupted views across the valley.

Kilima Camp offers accommodation in a collection of spacious canvas tents erected on permanent raised platforms for stability and protection from the elements. The property comprises 12 Classic Tents and 2 larger Deluxe Tents. Each unit is designed as a private, self-contained suite, blending classic safari aesthetics with modern operational comforts.

Each tent is constructed with heavy-duty canvas walls and a solid roof structure, sitting atop a polished wooden deck that extends to form a private verandah with safari chairs. The interior floor plan includes a bedroom area with full-sized beds, a writing desk, and an adjoined, permanent en-suite bathroom with a flush toilet and hot and cold running water for the shower. The tents are built with integrated insect-proof mesh over the window openings and feature a heavy-duty zippered main entrance, creating a fully enclosed and secure environment for a comfortable night's sleep.

Safari Activities and Unique Features of Kilima Camp

The primary activity is the classic game drive, conducted in customised 4x4 safari vehicles within the rich wildlife corridors of the Mara Triangle. Kilima Camp's location, however, provides two distinct features. The first is the passive game viewing potential from the camp's main areas and tent verandahs, where binoculars can reveal distant herds on the plains below. The second, more notable, feature is the exclusive access to equestrian safaris. These horse riding excursions are conducted on the private land surrounding the camp, offering a unique perspective on the terrain and its smaller flora and fauna. This activity is unavailable from properties situated inside the national reserve.

The signal strength can be intermittent within the individual tents due to their dispersal across the property.

Wildlife Safety Protocols

Given the camp's unfenced perimeter which allows for the free movement of wildlife, strict safety protocols are enforced after dark. Unaccompanied walking between the tents and the main lodge during hours of darkness is prohibited. Maasai security staff, known as 'askaris', are on duty to provide mandatory escorts for all guests, including children, ensuring safe passage around the property at night.
