Saruni Samburu Camp

Tier Luxury
Type Safari Lodge

Arid, semi-desert plains, dramatic rock formations, and the vital Ewaso Ng’iro River characterise the Samburu National Reserve.

Within the private Kalama Conservancy, which spans some 80,000 hectares north of the reserve, Saruni Samburu sits atop a colossal rocky outcrop. This location provides commanding panoramic views across the vast terrain towards Mount Kenya.

Saruni Samburu's Vantage Point and Arrival Experience

The lodge's defining feature is its elevated position. Guests primarily access Saruni Samburu via a scheduled flight to a local airstrip, such as Kalama. The lodge organises the subsequent road transfer, a guided game drive in itself that takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour.

A steep final ascent to the camp reinforces its seclusion and dominant vantage point over the surrounding territory. This elevation offers exceptional privacy and acts as a natural surveillance point for observing wildlife movements on the plains below.

Villas and Guest Accommodation at Saruni Samburu

Saruni Samburu's accommodation comprises six expansive, individually designed villas built from local stone, plaster, and timber with thatched roofing. The structures integrate organically into the rocky environment.

Each villa features an open-fronted design to maximise airflow and the exceptional views, operating as a private sanctuary away from the main lodge areas. Wildlife, including elephants and leopards, frequently moves through the unfenced property, so Samburu askaris escort guests to and from their villas after dark.

Inside a Saruni Samburu Villa

Each of the six luxury villas is distinct in its layout but shares a core set of amenities, including several configured for families or groups. The design fuses rustic materials with Italian-influenced sophistication. Select villas feature private plunge pools set directly into the rock.

  • En-suite bathrooms with open-air showers
  • Private verandahs with seating and daybeds
  • Spacious bedroom and lounge areas
  • High-quality linen and locally sourced furnishings
  • In-room drinking water and amenities

Kudu House and Communal Facilities

The main communal area, Kudu House, serves as the central hub for dining and socialising. It contains an open lounge, a reference library, and a dining space that opens onto a wide terrace.

The primary infinity swimming pool is located here, offering a remarkable viewpoint over a waterhole frequently visited by wildlife. A second, smaller infinity pool on a separate part of the property provides another quiet space for guests to relax.

The entire structure is open and airy, promoting constant engagement with the natural environment.

Guided Safaris and Cultural Activities in Kalama Conservancy

The Saruni safari experience is defined by its Samburu guides, who offer deep cultural insights into their people's relationship with the land and its wildlife. Game drives take place in custom-fitted 4x4 Land Cruisers within both the private Kalama Conservancy and the nearby Samburu National Reserve.

Guiding focuses on expert ecological knowledge, including tracking the area's 'Samburu Special Five': the Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and the gerenuk. Guests can also partake in guided bush walks, night drives within the conservancy, and visits to a local Samburu village for genuine cultural exchange.

The 'Warriors Academy' is a dedicated children's programme focused on bush skills and tracking, creating an engaging educational experience for younger guests.
