Sentrim Tsavo Lodge

Tier Mid-Range
Type Tented Camp

Tsavo East National Park is a vast expanse of semi-arid plains covering over 13,747 square kilometres, defined by the vital artery of the Tsavo River that cuts through its terrain. Sentrim Tsavo Lodge holds a prime position directly on the banks of this river. The entire property is oriented to provide panoramic views over a permanent, man-made waterhole that consistently attracts the park's famous red elephant herds.

Prime Location and Access within Tsavo East National Park

Sentrim Tsavo Lodge is situated inside the park boundaries, a key logistical advantage allowing guests to begin game drives immediately without transiting official park gates. The lodge is approximately 160 kilometres from Mombasa and 240 kilometres from Nairobi. Primary access is through the park's main Voi Gate, with clear signposting guiding travellers along the primary tracks to the lodge. The immediate surroundings are classic Tsavo bush country, characterised by distinctive red soil rich in iron oxide, acacia scrub, and iconic baobab trees.

Lodge Design and Guest Common Areas at Sentrim Tsavo

The main lodge complex offers a classic safari atmosphere, constructed from local stone and timber beneath a high, thatched roof that promotes natural ventilation. This central building houses the reception, a spacious lounge with comfortable soft furnishings, and the main dining area. The entire frontage remains open-sided, flowing onto a wide stone terrace that serves as the principal wildlife viewing deck. This design ensures that views of the waterhole are an integral part of the guest experience, whether dining or relaxing. A discreet perimeter fence encloses the property, providing a high degree of security which is particularly reassuring for families with young children, while not impeding the views of visiting wildlife.

Swimming Pool and Sundowner Terrace

A free-form swimming pool is located to one side of the main lodge building, providing a welcome respite during the heat of the day. The pool is surrounded by a paved sunbathing terrace equipped with sun loungers and umbrellas. Its strategic position affords guests uninterrupted views towards the waterhole, allowing for passive game viewing while relaxing between scheduled safari activities. Adjacent changing facilities are also provided for guest convenience.

Tented Accommodation at Sentrim Tsavo Lodge

Guest accommodation at the lodge is provided in permanent tented chalets, a style that combines the immersive feel of a classic safari tent with the comfort and security of a solid structure. The 25 individual tents are spaced generously across the property to ensure a good measure of privacy for all guests.

Features of the Permanent Tented Chalets

Each guest tent is built on a raised concrete plinth and features a private wooden verandah at the front. The structure combines durable canvas walls with a solid, permanent roof that extends over the verandah to provide ample shade. Entry is through a heavy-duty zippered flap, and all window openings are fitted with zippered canvas flaps backed by a layer of mosquito gauze, making the tents fully insect-proof when secured. Inside, the tent includes a sleeping area and a fully-integrated en-suite bathroom at the rear, separated by a partition. The bathrooms are equipped with a flush toilet, a washbasin with a vanity mirror, and a shower providing hot and cold running water. Water is heated via a dedicated system that operates during generator hours. Key features include:

  • Choice of double or twin bed configurations
  • Protective mosquito nets suspended over each bed
  • A small writing desk with a chair
  • Wardrobe and luggage storage space
  • A private verandah furnished with safari chairs

Navigating Power and Connectivity in the Bush

Electrical power at Sentrim Tsavo Lodge is supplied by an on-site generator that runs on a fixed schedule, a standard practice in remote safari locations to manage fuel consumption and minimise environmental impact. The generator typically operates for several hours in the early morning (from approximately 5:00 am to 9:00 am) and again in the evening (from approximately 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm). This schedule aligns with guest routines for morning preparations and evening activities. Guests can charge electronic devices such as cameras and phones in their tents only during these hours. Outside of this schedule, power to the rooms is off. A limited number of communal charging points may be available in the main lounge area during the day. Complimentary Wi-Fi is provided, but the signal is generally confined to the reception and lounge and can be intermittent due to its reliance on a satellite connection.

Wildlife Viewing from the Lodge Waterhole

The lodge's greatest asset is its direct and commanding view over the productive waterhole, which is floodlit after dark to extend viewing opportunities. This feature provides reliable and often exceptional wildlife sightings directly from the main terrace, pool area, and a number of the forward-facing tents. Elephants are the most prolific visitors, frequently arriving in large breeding herds to drink, bathe, and socialise. Other species commonly seen from the lodge include Cape buffalo, waterbuck, impala, and zebra. The constant availability of water and prey animals can also attract predators, though sightings of lions or leopards directly from the lodge are opportunistic and not guaranteed.

Who Should Stay at Sentrim Tsavo Lodge?

Sentrim Tsavo Lodge is an excellent mid-range safari choice, particularly well-suited to first-time safari travellers and families. The secure, fenced perimeter provides essential peace of mind for those travelling with children. Furthermore, the outstanding sedentary wildlife viewing from the lodge's common areas allows for a rewarding safari experience even between game drives. The timed power supply is a standard operational reality for most lodges within the park and simply requires guests to plan their device charging around the generator schedule. This property is less suitable for seasoned safari veterans seeking an unfenced, high-immersion bush camp or for travellers who require constant, 24-hour power and connectivity for professional obligations.
