Sweetwaters Serena Camp

Type Tented Camp

Sweetwaters Serena Camp sits within the 360-square-kilometre Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a pivotal conservation area on Kenya's Laikipia Plateau, approximately 217 kilometres from Nairobi.

The conservancy is famous for its successful rhino breeding programme and unique position astride the Equator. The camp itself occupies a prime location overlooking a large, floodlit waterhole, which provides a constant theatre of wildlife activity right at the property's edge.

Location and Unrivalled Wildlife Viewing at Sweetwaters Serena Camp

The camp's placement inside Ol Pejeta Conservancy gives guests immediate access to a full circuit of game drives in a Big Five destination. The main attraction, however, remains the waterhole around which the camp is built.

A low, unobtrusive fence allows for continuous and safe viewing of the diverse species that frequent the water source, including elephants, giraffes, buffalo, and a significant population of black and white rhinos.

The floodlights activate after dusk, offering an uncommon opportunity to observe nocturnal behaviours directly from the central viewing deck or a private tent veranda.

Beyond standard vehicle safaris, the camp’s location facilitates specialised excursions. Sweetwaters is the base for visiting the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the only facility of its kind in Kenya. It offers refuge to orphaned and rescued chimpanzees.

The conservancy's status also allows for unique activities, such as guided visits to the rhino sanctuary and a stop at the Equator line marker for a practical demonstration of the Coriolis effect.

Camp Layout and Classic Safari Design

Sweetwaters Serena Camp is a permanent tented camp comprising 56 guest tents, each erected on a solid, raised plinth. The central public area is a more substantial stone structure featuring a traditional thatched roof and large open-plan spaces that house the reception, lounge, and dining facilities.

A network of stone pathways connects the main lodge to the individual guest tents, which are arranged in a wide arc to maximise views of the waterhole.

Tented Accommodation and Room Types at Sweetwaters Serena Camp

The camp offers two distinct tiers of accommodation, with all tents providing a classic safari experience. The standard tents are spacious, khaki-coloured canvas units with solid floors and private en-suite bathrooms featuring hot-water showers.

Each tent includes a small, furnished veranda oriented towards the waterhole, providing a private space for wildlife observation. The interior design is functional, with polished wood furniture and comfortable bedding.

The Premier Morani Wing Tents

For an upgraded experience, the Morani Wing offers 17 larger and more secluded tents. These units feature enhanced interior space, upgraded soft furnishings, and a more expansive bathroom with premium fixtures.

The primary distinction of the Morani Wing is its prime positioning, offering some of the most uninterrupted and proximate views of the waterhole and the surrounding plains.

  • Solid-walled en-suite bathroom with shower
  • Private furnished veranda
  • 240V power outlets for charging devices
  • Complimentary mineral water and toiletries
  • Wardrobe and luggage rack space

Dining and Social Spaces Overlooking the Waterhole

The central Rhino Restaurant serves all meals, typically in a buffet format that presents a wide selection of international and local dishes. The space is partially open-air, allowing diners to enjoy the sounds of the bush while they eat.

Adjoining the restaurant is the Waterhole Bar, a well-stocked lounge area with comfortable seating and an extensive outdoor terrace. This terrace is the social centre of the camp, particularly in the evening when guests gather to watch the floodlit activity at the waterhole.

Practical Information and Camp Facilities

The camp is well-equipped for travellers with specific requirements. Each tent features standard 240V power points, suitable for charging cameras, phones, and other electronics, powered by solar with a backup generator.

Beyond traditional game drives, the camp directly facilitates visits to the chimpanzee sanctuary, guided bush walks, and night drives within the conservancy. For families, the camp is fully enclosed by a robust electric perimeter fence, ensuring children can move safely between their tent and the main areas without risk from wildlife entering the grounds.
