The Emakoko

Tier Luxury
Type Safari Lodge

Nairobi National Park is a globally unique conservation area, covering 117 square kilometres of savannah, acacia bush, and riverine forest ecosystems that function directly adjacent to Kenya's capital city.

The Emakoko occupies a steep escarpment along the park's southern boundary, giving it commanding views over the Mbagathi River Valley, a natural corridor for wildlife movement just 7 kilometres from the city centre.

Strategic Location Inside Nairobi National Park

The Emakoko's key advantage is its strategic location inside Nairobi National Park, which allows it to remain highly accessible. Road transfers from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) take approximately 45 minutes, depending on city traffic, making the lodge an efficient first or last stop on a Kenyan safari circuit.

The Emakoko uses a private access gate, allowing guests to avoid public park queues and enjoy straightforward excursions to nearby attractions. These include the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, famous for its elephant orphan rehabilitation programme, and the Giraffe Centre, home to a breeding population of endangered Rothschild's giraffes.

This positioning provides a genuine wildlife experience combined with access to Nairobi's key conservation activities without difficult travel arrangements.

Lodge Design and Unfenced Wildlife Experience

The Emakoko’s substantial structures are built from local stone and dark timber, integrating them naturally into the rocky cliffside. The main lodge and individual guest rooms are solid, permanent buildings rather than temporary canvas tents.

The property is entirely unfenced, allowing wildlife such as leopard, buffalo, and hyena to move freely through the grounds, particularly at night. This design offers an immersive and authentic bush experience.

For guest safety, uniformed askaris, the Swahili term for guards, are on duty 24 hours a day to escort guests between their rooms and the main lodge area after dark.

Accommodation and Room Design at The Emakoko

The Emakoko maintains an exclusive atmosphere with only ten guest rooms in total. Each room is carefully positioned along the escarpment to guarantee privacy and uninterrupted views across the river valley.

The design philosophy prioritises solid comfort and a strong connection to the natural environment. While the stone construction provides excellent natural insulation, the rooms are not equipped with air-conditioning.

Cooling is effectively managed by ceiling fans and strategic ventilation through large, meshed windows.

River View Rooms

The standard rooms offer spacious, well-appointed interiors, each featuring a private verandah. The interior design favours natural materials, with polished stone floors and large, comfortable beds. The en-suite bathrooms are a key feature, often incorporating open-plan designs and sizeable walk-in showers.

  • En-suite bathroom with shower
  • Private verandah overlooking the river
  • Ceiling fans
  • In-room safe
  • Complimentary WiFi access

Private Suites

The Emakoko offers several upper-tier suites for guests requiring additional space and exclusivity. These larger units feature expanded living areas and private plunge pools set into their terraces.

The pools provide an excellent vantage point for observing wildlife in the valley below while affording complete privacy.

Self-Sufficient Power and Lodge Connectivity

The Emakoko operates with complete self-sufficiency. A comprehensive solar power system provides 24-hour electricity to all rooms and common areas.

This system receives backup from a diesel generator during periods of extended overcast weather to ensure uninterrupted service.

Reliable WiFi is available throughout the lodge, including within the guest rooms, a significant logistical convenience for a property located inside a national park.
