Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a pivotal Kenyan conservation area, internationally recognised for its comprehensive wildlife programmes, most notably the protection of its significant rhinoceros populations. The River Camp occupies a prime stretch of river frontage within the 364-square-kilometre conservancy, a strategic position that capitalises on the consistent movement of wildlife to the water's edge.

Architecture and Design at The River Camp

The River Camp is a permanent establishment, constructed from a blend of heavy-duty canvas, sustainable timber, and local stone. The central mess area, which houses the lounge and dining facilities, is an open-plan structure designed to maximise airflow and provide uninterrupted views of the riverine environment. Stone-lined pathways connect this main lodge to eight guest tents, which are carefully spaced to ensure privacy. The entire property is unfenced, a deliberate design choice that facilitates an unfiltered safari experience and minimises the camp's physical impact on animal movement patterns.

Guest Tents and Suites at The River Camp

The River Camp provides accommodation in just eight expansive canvas tents, each elevated on a solid, raised platform for enhanced views and security. The interior design balances classic safari aesthetics with modern comforts, featuring polished wooden floors and high-quality bedding. The primary feature of each suite is a large, private viewing deck, constructed to face the Ewaso Nyiro River. These decks are furnished with comfortable campaign chairs and a small table, providing a secluded space for guests to observe wildlife activity directly from their accommodation.

Guest Tent Facilities and Power Supply

Each guest tent features a full en-suite bathroom with a flush toilet and a shower supplying consistent hot and cold running water. Responding to modern guest requirements, the camp operates on a 24-hour solar power system, fully supported by a backup generator. This system provides sufficient, reliable energy for lighting and for charging multiple electronic devices via strategically placed power outlets. While the tents are not artificially air-conditioned, their design promotes natural ventilation through mesh-screened windows and high canvas ceilings. Key features include:

  • Private, river-facing viewing deck
  • En-suite bathroom with hot water
  • 24-hour electricity with multiple charging points
  • Writing desk and comfortable seating area
  • Warm bedding and hot water bottles for cool nights

Safari Activities and Wildlife at The River Camp

The camp's location inside Ol Pejeta Conservancy guarantees exceptional access to a high density of wildlife. Guests can expect regular sightings of both black and white rhinoceros, a direct result of the conservancy's successful anti-poaching and conservation programmes. The camp is also situated conveniently for visits to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the only facility of its kind in Kenya, offering a unique opportunity to observe these rescued primates. Game drives, conducted by the camp's expert guides, focus not only on the Big Five but also on the unique northern Kenyan species found here, such as Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, and Beisa oryx. The river directly in front of the camp is a focal point for wildlife, attracting a constant procession of elephant, buffalo, and various antelope species, which can often be viewed from the main lodge or private tent decks.

Camp Logistics and Guest Safety Protocols

The River Camp's operational logistics are managed to an exceptionally high standard for a remote location, situated approximately 220 kilometres north of Nairobi. A reliable 24-hour power supply and consistent Wi-Fi service, available in both the tents and communal areas, are notable features. Given the camp's unfenced nature, stringent safety protocols are enforced. Guests are not permitted to walk unaccompanied around the camp after dark. Trained Maasai askaris (guards) are on duty at all times and provide a mandatory escort service for all movements between the tents and the main lodge during evening and early morning hours. These escorts are highly experienced in animal behaviour and are equipped to ensure guest safety is maintained throughout their stay.

Who Should Stay at The River Camp

The River Camp is best suited for discerning safari enthusiasts and travellers with a specific interest in wildlife conservation. The property's primary strengths are its high-quality guiding and exceptional access to Ol Pejeta's unique rhino and chimpanzee programmes. The camp’s unfenced perimeter provides an authentic and immersive experience, making it an excellent choice for experienced safari-goers and wildlife photographers. This unfenced design may, however, make it less suitable for families with very young children or first-time safari travellers who might prefer the perceived security of a fenced property.
